Accessing the Companion Canvas Course
A full Canvas course has been developed to accompany this open textbook. The course includes module structure, assignments, quizzes, and activities aligned with the chapters in this book.
How to Access

Canvas Commons: Faculty at institutions that use Canvas can import the complete course directly from Canvas Commons. (Link coming soon).

Free Version from Instructure: If your institution does not use Canvas, Instructure provides free accounts where you can host and explore the course. (Link and directions coming soon).
Availability
The companion course will be available after the first iterative feedback cycle with students and ready for Spring 2025.
If your institution uses Canvas (recommended)

Open a course shell where you want the content

In Canvas, go to the destination course (an empty/“sandbox” course works well). Depending on your institution’s settings, you may need your IT or LMS Admin to create this for you.

Open Canvas Commons

From Global Navigation, click Commons (or use Import from Commons on the course Home page). Canvas Community+1

Search for the course

Search: “Business Communications in the Age of AI (Companion Course)”

Open the resource details to confirm scope, version, and licensing. Canvas Community

Import

Click Import/Download, choose your course(s), then Import into Course.

Canvas will queue the import and notify you when it’s done. Canvas Community

Post-import checks (strongly recommended)

Adjust dates during or after import (Canvas can shift due dates automatically). Canvas Community

Run the Link Validator (catches broken URLs, unpublished items). Course → Settings → Validate Links in Content → Start. Canvas Community

Publish modules and verify external tools (LTIs) at your institution (tools sometimes require local re-auth).

Set a grading scheme (if your institution requires it) and confirm the course time zone.

If you don’t have Canvas: use Instructure’s free option
Create a free Canvas (Free-for-Teacher) account
Go to Try Canvas and choose the free teacher option, or use the sign-up flow in the Instructure Community guide. Instructure+1
Log in and create a new course
From the Dashboard, click Start a New Course (name it anything—you can rename later).
Get the course content (two paths):
Path 1: Import from Canvas Commons
Free-for-Teacher accounts have access to public resources in Canvas Commons. Open Commons, search for the course title, and Import into your free course. Canvas Community+1
Path 2: Import a downloadable package (.imscc)If you prefer (or if Commons is unavailable), download our .imscc package and import via Settings → Import Course Content → Content Type: Canvas Course Export Package. Then Choose File → Import. Canvas Community
Post-import checks
Run the Link Validator and publish modules. Canvas Community

Will my institution’s Canvas see updates?
Not automatically. If we ship major revisions, we’ll update the Commons listing. You can re-import or import selectively (by module/item) into your existing course. Canvas CommunityDo LTIs (external tools) come over?
Many do, but some require your local Canvas admin to enable/configure the tool. Plan a quick tool check after import.Is the free Instructure option really free?
Yes—Canvas Free-for-Teacher is an Instructure offering that remains available for educators; it’s great for piloting and personal courses. Instructure+1
