Module 09: Intelligence

Description: What does it mean to be “smart”? This module explores different theories of intelligence, examining how intelligence is defined, measured, and understood. We consider both traditional views of intelligence and newer theories of multiple intelligences.

Why This Module is Important: Understanding intelligence is essential for counseling practice. Therapists use this knowledge to help clients recognize their cognitive strengths, develop compensatory strategies for challenges, and build self-efficacy. This understanding helps counselors interpret psychological assessments and explain results sensitively to clients. Beyond therapy, these principles guide educational placement decisions, inform employee selection methods, and help AI developers model human intelligence. This knowledge helps you understand cognitive capabilities in any context.

Module Learning Objectives: By the end of this module students will be able to…

  • MLO1: Synthesize competing theories of intelligence to develop a comprehensive framework for understanding cognitive abilities across species and cultures. (CLO1, CLO2, CLO4, ULO4, APA1, APA2, APA4)
  • MLO2: Compare the roles of creativity and intelligence in life success. (CLO2, ULO4, APA2)
  • MLO3: Evaluate potential biases in intelligence testing. (CLO4, ULO4, APA4)
