Global Identity, Public domain image

Description: Identity emerges from the interaction between individual characteristics and cultural contexts. This module explores how different aspects of identity – including gender, social roles, and group memberships – are shaped by cultural forces. We examine how cultures define and maintain different identity categories and roles.

Module Learning Objectives: By the end of this module students will be able to…

  • MLO1: Evaluate how cultural groups define gender roles (CLO2)
  • MLO2: Apply identity concepts to cultural group analysis (CLO4)
  • MLO3: Communicate findings about cultural identity effectively (CLO5)

Why This Module Is Important: Understanding cultural influences on identity is crucial for working with diverse populations. Healthcare providers use this knowledge to deliver culturally sensitive care. Human resource professionals apply these insights to create inclusive workplaces. Social service providers use this understanding to support diverse communities, while educators apply it to create affirming learning environments. This knowledge helps you recognize how cultural contexts shape people’s understanding of who they are and their place in society.
